Yes. The proposed supervisor(s) that a candidate lists in their application must be different than the individual(s) who supervised/are supervising their PhD and their research focus should correspond to the award category you are applying for (i.e., basic science vs. clinical research). The proposed supervisor must be from within the Faculty of Health Sciences but you could have a co-supervisor that is from another faculty.

No. Applications are only to be submitted online. Reference letters and the confirmation of supervisor support must be sent via email. Please ensure that all application components are received prior to the application deadline.

Please note that candidates must fulfill or have fulfilled all degree requirements for a PhD, PhD-equivalent or health professional degree in order to be eligible for these awards.

To be eligible for this program, you must have started your postdoctoral or health professional degree studies on, or after, July 1, 2023. Additionally, eligible candidates must be within five years of receiving their PhD or MD. Individuals who completed post-doctoral studies or a fellowship at McMaster under a different supervisor are not eligible.

The candidate must plan to conduct their research in a department or school (or related centre or institute) that resides in the Faculty of Health Sciences at McMaster University.

For candidates who hold (or are completing) a PhD, the proposed supervisor(s) listed in your application must be different than your PhD supervisor. Your proposed supervisor must be from within the Faculty of Health Sciences but you could have a co-supervisor that is from another faculty.

Priority will be given to those applicants whose graduate training has not been exclusively at McMaster.

If you are unsure about whether to apply for the Michael G. DeGroote Fellowship Award in Basic Biomedical Science or the Michael G. DeGroote Fellowship Award in Clinical Research, please email us with details on your research and your proposed supervisor and we will recommend the appropriate category.

No. Awards are non-renewable. Candidates cannot be prior recipients of the Michael G. DeGroote Fellowship Award.

Yes. Although we understand that explaining such complex topics as academic background and research proposals in a concise form can be difficult, we must enforce strict page limits due to the number of applications received. Please keep within the page limit while ensuring that your application is still legible and neat.

Applications will be rated based on the applicant’s track record of publications, grants/fellowships, references and their overall CV, as well as the strength of their proposed research project.

The committee aims to have the selections made approximately one month after the application deadline. All applicants are notified of the result of their application once selections have been made.

You are still eligible to apply. Please note that selection committee members are required to abstain from rating any applications for which they are listed as the proposed supervisor.
